Toyotas Big Dollar Super Car

We are in a global recession, yet there is a car that you have to have the company’s approval, before you are allowed to drive it out the door.

The $350,000 two seater, LFA Lexus can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and has speeds as high as 202 mph. There will be only 500 of these hand assembled, super cars produced.

Having the cash to purchase the LFA is not enough, however, as any buyer of the Lexus has to be approved, with background checks. These will include such things as location, other cars you have owned and past driving habits.

One Lexus manager said the chief concern was that the car be driven frequently and in the ‘right’ kind of places.

“We want people who will drive the car, who will be seen in the car,” said Paul Williamson, national manager at Lexus College, Toyota’s dealer training school. “We want it to be seen on the right roads, in front of the right restaurants and not just being enjoyed by one individual in their private garage.”

Toyota aims to make the Lexus LFA stand among the elite of cars, such as Porsche, Lamborghini and Ferrari, as an exclusive vehicle.

This comes at a time when Toyota is facing replacing gas pedals on 4 million vehicles, because the pedals get stuck in the floor mats and cause sudden acceleration. This is the 6th largest recall in the U.S.

Beginning in January, dealers agreed to shorten the length of the pedals by three-fourths of an inch, while the company develops replacement pedals. The Japanese automaker told owners to remove the driver’s side floor mat to keep the gas pedal from becoming jammed.

The recall also includes the luxury Lexus ES350, the vehicle that focused public attention on the danger, after a fiery fatal accident in California.

The floor mats are only sold in the United States. Toyota said it would provide newly designed replacement floor mats.
