Polar Bear Threatened Species

On the 14th May 2008 the United States listed the polar bear as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, (ESA), much to the consternation of many people in Alaska, including the then Governor Sarah Palin.
While environmentalists said it was loss of habitat that was putting the bears at risk, the opponents to the move said the listing would cripple offshore oil and gas development in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas in Alaska’s northern waters, the prime habitat for the only polar bears under U.S. jurisdiction.
The environmentalists believe the polar bears could become endangered within three polar bear generations.
The life of a polar bear in the Arctic circle is not an easy one, living in a world of ice that is constantly on the move
