Bedbugs Close New York Clothing Stores

The up-market teen fave clothing SoHo store, Hollister, in New York city, a subsidiary of Abercrombie & Fitch, was temporarily closed due to an infestation of bedbugs, which were affecting certain isolated areas of the store.

The four-storey flagship of Abercrombie & Fitch, on the world-famous Fifth Avenue, is known for hiring models and having them stand around scantily clad., was also closed.

The first reports of bedbug bites in the store occurred three weeks ago, when an employee and a manager complained, but they were ignored. The bedbugs appeared to spread like wildfire.

Multiple employees were covered in bites before the management finally took notice and closed the store.

Ambercrombie & Fitch in South Street, Seaport, closed their doors, but not before hundreds of shoppers, both local and tourists, plus the employees, had been exposed to the bedbug infestation.

The sign on the closed shop read, ‘Closed for maintenance.’

The company has pressed for New York Mayor, Michel Bloomberg, to help solve what is called a ‘growing infestation of bedbugs in New York City’. It appears that Manhattan has had a rise in the bed bug infestation, with the pests appearing in banks, grocery stores, movie theatres and schools. Treating bedbugs can be very expensive and no insurance policy covers it.

Bedbugs are small, elusive parasitic insects that live by feeding exclusively on the blood of humans and other warm-blooded animals. Though not strictly nocturnal, they are mainly active at night. They were eradicated as pests in developed countries in the 1940s, but there has been a resurgence since 1995. The bedbug lives for around a year, depending on the availability of food.

Cockroaches, ants, mites, spiders and centipedes are the natural enemies of bedbugs.
