Killer Smog In Russia

Deaths doubled in Russia’s capital, through the toxic fumes from ongoing wildfires and record heat levels.

Both the locals and tourists took to wearing protective face masks as a toxic fog of poisonous smoke continues to blanket Moscow.

Andrei Seltsovky, Moscow’s chief health official said the local morgues are close to capacity, as Moscow swelters under a killer-smog. He said that the number of deaths in the city is twice as high as usual.

Russia’s chief doctor said that spending just two hours on Moscow’s smog-choked streets is the equivalent of smoking two packs of cigarettes.

Even pets were being given surgical face masks for protection against the forest fire smoke. The acrid smog seeped into apartments, offices and the metro, forcing residents to flee the city in droves.

The smog on the runway at Moscow’s Domodedovo airport caused around 90 flights to be delayed or diverted, because of the low visibility created by the smoke.

Normally it is industry that creates the worst smog as is seen the Chinese city of Linfen that sits on the banks of the Fen River. The Blacksmith Institute considers this is the most polluted town in the world.  It is home to an enormous coal industry, steel plants and refineries, providing almost two thirds of China’s energy.

The air is dark in the town and its inhabitants literally choke on the coal dust. The level of sulfur dioxide and other pollutants exceeds any acceptable limits. Drinking water is scarce due to the water sources contaminated by arsenic.

Russia’s second largest city above the Arctic City, Norilsk, is home to the world’s largest smelting complex. The town of acid rain and smog is the country’s greatest polluter, releasing 500 tonnes each of copper and nickel oxides, as well as 2 million tons of sulfur dioxide annually.

Norilsk Nickel controls one-third of the world’s nickel deposits and is Russia’s main producer of nickel, cobalt, platinum and palladium.

Mexico City, Mexico, one of the world’s most populated cities, is also recognized as one of the most smog threatened cities in the world.

Some experts believe that worldwide there are annually more deaths linked to air pollution than to automobile accidents.
