Global Warming?

While the world faces the ongoing saga of global warming, take a look at what is happening in the Northern Hemisphere, where people are being warned to avoid exposure to the extreme cold conditions, dress warmly and eat protein-rich food. Elderly people and those suffering from heart conditions are asked to steer clear of trips and crowded places.

China: Since November last year, waves of heavy snow have stricken most parts of China, creating chaos across the country. Many provinces have faced electricity rationing, increased food prices, primary and secondary schools closed. More than 1 million people have been affected in eastern and central China, with the evacuation of 5,435 people.

India and Kashmir: As a strong cold wave of weather struck India, more than 100 people died from cold. Heavy fog conditions have caused train collisions.

Bangladesh: Around 30 people, including 28 children have died of cold related diseases.

Nepal: Cold related deaths have reached 25, with many cold related diseases. Many schools have been forced to close.

South Korea: Snowstorms blast South Korea, bring communication and travel to a halt.

United States: Most of the U.S. has been hit by fierce snow storms, claiming five lives. Hundreds of thousands were left without power. More than 150 schools closed.

Canada: An extreme cold alert was raised in January, 2010.

United Kingdom: January 2010 saw central and southern England  swept by blizzards, delaying hundreds of flights and closing as many schools.

Russia: Around 200 freight trains are stuck at port cities in Russia’s far East region, while Moscow was paralyzed in this winter’s largest snowfall.

France: From January 6 a cold snap has swept across Europe slamming northern France and Paris.

Finland: Southern Finland has been swept by a blizzard causing at least 20 road accidents.

Austria: Three Austrian citizens were frozen to death as they returned home from local bars.

Norway: Road, rail and air traffic in chaos in South West Norway.

Germany: Freezing weather holds Germany in its biting grip as all travel is disrupted across Europe.

Romania: 11 cold weather related deaths were the result of a week-long blizzard.

Czech Republic: Prague citizens have been warned of excessive cold as the big chill continues.

Spain: Thirty major roads were closed due to heavy rain and snow.
