Facing Hurricane Alex
Posted on 7 July 2010 by LynThomas in Uncategorized
With the first of the seasons hurricanes rushing towards its shores, the people of the Gulf region could only batten down and hope for the best.
Dan and Grace Eaton were celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary, down by the beach. Suddenly the fore runner waves of Hurricane Alex drenched the happy couple.
Those who dared to brave the huge waves kicked up by Hurricane Alex, took time out to try to read the turbulent waters.
Maintenance crews were flat out removing portable life-saving towers from the beaches and any thing else that could be moved to safety.
Still others, abandoned their day at the beach, in face of the steadily increasing wind and hurried for home, while some brave soldiers dived into the turbulent surf, pleased to be able to swim while the ocean was still free of oil.
Birds scurried to find some kind of shelter from the storm, while there were those who used the wind power to try out their latest toy.
All those who had been frantically trying to clean up the oil slick from Deepwater Horizon oil well, were forced to abandon their efforts. Over 6000 boats were forced to flee for harbour safety and all work on the beaches were abandoned. Sand piled up over the efforts of the last 10 weeks.
Residents and oil clean up crews could only watch helplessly as Hurricane Alex roared relentlessly towards their coast, carrying even more oil onto their beaches.
