Contaminated Romain Lettuce Recalled

Following 19 cases reported of E.coli 0145 infections, Freshway Foods voluntarily recalling some products containing Romaine lettuce, according to the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Twelve people were hospitalized, with three potentially in a life-threatening condition. Twenty-three states have been affected by the recall.

The New York state Public Health Laboratory in Albany discovered the contamination in a bag of Freshway Foods shredded romaine lettuce, according to the FDA.

E. coli infection can cause mild diarrhea or more severe complications, including kidney damage. The three patients with life-threatening symptoms were diagnosed with hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can cause bleeding in the brain or kidneys. In severe cases of E.coli infection can prove fatal, especially among the very young or elderly.

Recalled items include products sold by Freshway Foods for sale in food service, wholesale, and in-store salad bars and delis, according to Commissioner Tommy Irvin. Georgia stores which could have the potentially harmful lettuce include Kroger and Ingles.

Freshway Foods, based in Ohio, says prepackaged romaine or bagged salad mixes containing romaine available in supermarkets are not included in the recall. The products were sold under the Freshway and Imperial Sysco brand. The recall also affects “grab and go” salads sold at Kroger, Giant Eagle, Ingles Markets and Marsh grocery stores.

“While the recalled lettuce should not be consumed, that does not mean that other products are not safe to eat. Fresh fruits and vegetables are an important part of a balanced diet.” Columbus Health Commissioner Dr. Theresa Long said.

In July 2009 22,000 containers of packaged romaine lettuce, distributed by California-based Tanimura and Angle Inc, were recalled after salmonella was found during a routine box check. Earlier in the month the Obama administration had called for stricter food safety guidelines to prevent large-scale outbreaks that occur in the United States, due to salmonella and E.coli contamination.

700 people, in 46 states became sick from salmonella in the first half of 2009 alone. Salmonella is a bacteria that causes food poisoning.

Consumers are encouraged to thoroughly wash all vegetables before consummation.
