Chinas Wide Spread Contamination Of Food

Many farmers grow their own food separately from the chemically-raised crops they sell. “I feel there is nothing safe I can eat now because people are in too much of a hurry to make money,” said Huang Zhanliang, a farmer in Hebei.

Applying forchlorfenuron, a growth accelerator, Chinese farmers created a storm of flying pips, shattered shells and wet shrapnel, as watermelons exploded.

Forchlorfenuron is said to advance the crop by as much as two weeks, besides increasing the size and price of the fruit by more than 20%.

The damaged fruit was fed to pigs and fish, when it couldn’t be sold, from around 20 farms, involving 45 hectares of melons.

A study by researchers at Nanjing Agricultural University estimated that a tenth of China’s rice is tainted with the heavy metal cadmium.Some samples were contaminated up to five times the legal limit.

One third of 696 samples of food made with flour, including dumplings and steamed buns, were found to have levels of aluminium above national standards. Excess use of baking powder, containing the metal was blamed.

Powdered milk was discovered tainted with industrial chemical melamine to give the appearance of high protein content, killing 6 babies and sickened 300,000 others. Although all melamine-laced dairy products are said to have been confiscated or destroyed, they still make their appearance in the market place. More milk was found contaminated, this time with leather-hydrolyzed protein, which acts the same as melamine.

Bean sprouts were treated with sodium nitrate and urea, as well as antibiotics and the plant hormone 6-benzyladenine. Not only were the sprouts meant to grow quicker they looked ‘shinier’ in the market place.

Yard-long green beans were found contaminated with banned pesticide isocarbophos.

There have been reports of human birth control chemicals being used on cucumber plants and barite powder being injected into chickens to increase their weight.

Photographs of pork were taken that showed the pork so loaded with bacteria that it glowed an eerie iridescent blue in the dark, when the lights were turned off. Officials claimed the meat was safe to eat provided it was well cooked.

Ninety-one villagers in central China’s Hunan province were hospitalized with food poisoning, after eating pork said to have been tainted with steroid clenbuterol, an additive that makes meat leaner.

Experts claim that between 20-30 million diseased pigs enter the Chinese market every year.

A professor from Wuhan Polytechnic University estimated that 10% of all meals in China were cooked in recycled oil, scavenged from drains beneath restaurants, in what has come to be known as ‘sewer oil’.

Toxic container boxes were recently seized. The foam boxes, banned in 1999, were still widely used, releasing toxic elements when warmed by food.

Other discoveries include arsenic in soy sauce, steamed buns with banned chemical preservatives, others buns dyed, bleach in mushrooms and detergent borax in pork.

Many wary customers in China prefer to buy imported goods, as they believe them to be safer. However, the Fruit Industry Association of Guangdong province told reporters that most ‘imported’ fruit are grown in China.
