Travel Blackboard reported a ‘hopeless romantic’ set off a massive security scare at Newark Liberty International Airport, when a young man dashed past security into a passengers’ only area.
Jiang had been caught on a surveillance camera as he ducked under a rope barrier and walked hand in hand with his girlfriend toward the boarding area, in order to gain some extra time with her. Time and a kiss that cost him dearly.
Flights were grounded for three hours and all passengers rescreened, as airport security searched for the 28 year old student, Haisong Jiang, who is studying for his doctoral degree in molecular biosciences at Rutgers University.
An intensive man hunt followed as authorities attempted to track down the wayward student. He had left the airport and gone to a gym, before the authorities caught up with him.
Port Authorities confirmed that Jiang has since been arrested and charged with defiant trespass. Jiang could face a $500 fine.
At the John FK International Airport, terminal 8 was evacuated and all passengers rescreened, when a first class passenger from American Airlines, left the lounge, opened a door that was used only by airport workers and walked through. The breach happened at 3.30 p.m. and was picked up by security cameras.
It is not clear yet, whether the passenger will be charged.
Asia News Network reported that in the Philippines, a Saudi Arabian teenager, dressed in a pilot’s uniform, was arrested at Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport, after entering a restricted area, without the required clearance.
Hani Abdulelah Buchari, 19, a student of the Master Flying School, in Pasay City, Manila, used the disguise to enter a restricted area of the airport, as he went to collect his father, a retired Saudi pilot.
Bl-Naia operations chief, Ferdinand Sampol, said “Buchari has been transferred to the Bureau of Immigration’s detention centre. He will face criminal charges for breaching airport security and for overstaying his visa in the Philippines.”
Bokhari said he was just waiting for his father, Abdulla Bokhari, who was due to arrive. He said he was wearing the pilot’s uniform to surprise his father.
The Manila International Airport Authority, which runs the terminals, said it was conducting a security review to prevent similar incidents from occurring again.
